Soho Townhouse Renovation & Rooftop Addition

Formerly the studio and workshop of mid century art and furniture masters, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, this building in the Historic District of Soho was transformed into an 11,000sf private home with a commercial space on the ground floor.

Neighboring buildings were underpinned to lower the level of the cellar which is now a full spa for the homeowner. Stacked stone walls blend into the cellar swimming pool with an endless wave machine and hot tub, and the space expands into a fitness area, massage room, sauna, and steam room. The home includes a 2-story living room with wood burning fireplace, 6 bedrooms, 11 unique bathrooms, wine room, a new commercial speed elevator, and an interior courtyard that brings natural daylight to the middle of every floor. The building also includes a rooftop addition for indoor/outdoor living, multiple terraces, and a rooftop pool. Handmade artisan detailing is featured throughout the home.

This project won Interior Design Magazine’s 2020 NYCxDesign Award for Best Freestanding House/Townhouse, the 2020 Honor Award for Architectural Interiors from the Society Of American Registered Architects, and National Stone Institute’s 2020 Pinnacle Award for Residential, Single Family Home.  It is also featured in the 2023 book, “New View Northeast” by Benton Buckley Books.  Our firm is one of twenty recognized in this book.
